Kate Trafeli

PAINTER. LONDON. UNITED KINGDOM.

My name is Kate Trafeli, I was born in Akron, Ohio and moved out West when I was a young child. Then to London in my late 20s, and Italy for 10 years. Now I’m back in London. My own personal artistic belief echoes what Georgia O’Keefe said: “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way—things I had no words for.”.

I’ve been painting since before I could write: some of my earliest memories are of painting at easels my artist grandmother set up for my younger brother Brad and myself in her studio. She was a professional ceramicist and painter in a time when this was very rare for women and I loved her magical studio and home.

In all my work I am translating memory, emotion and experience into colour planes, symbol-shapes and composition. It is a compulsion as well as intuitive process that I cannot ignore. I am very fortunate that after many years I am able to devote myself full time to this work: it feels urgent to be in the studio as much as I am able.

My studio is a messy box of a room inside an industrial garage in a grimy part of London. The only windows are skylights – so zero views – and no distractions as well as pretty fantastic indirect northern light. Although I shared studio space in the past now I am a solo artist in this space: this is something I treasure in a busy life.
