Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso maintained a long friendship for years and a close relationship with the city of Barcelona. Coinciding with the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of the artist from Malaga, and the 40th anniversary of the Catalan painter, our good friend Jean Marie del Moral tells us about and documents the “Epistolario catalán de Joan Miró”, magnificent book by Editorial Barcino and the Miró Foundation, which collects some 500 letters sent by Miró to friends, including, of course, Pablo Picasso.
We are fortunate and pleased to present some of those letters, in their original language, French and Spanish, on the following pages. To mark this anniversary, a highly recommended exhibition, the “Miró Picasso” exhibition, will be inaugurated in October 2023 at the Miró Foundation and the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. Ayer le mandé por correo certificado 4 fotografias de obras mias conforme le habia dicho en Paris. Tenga en cuenta que están todas pintadas antes de conocer Francia.
He pasado unos dias en Barcelona. Efecto, después de haber vivido en Paris, muy aplastante. La intelectualidad vive con 5o años de retraso y los artistas hacen el efecto de aficionados. Carencia de temperamento y muchas pretensiones! Aquí viene un sueño que atonta a todos esos desgraciados que se pasan la vida aquí. Conforme, conV., en que para ser pintor hay que quedarse en Paris.
Puede que aquí nos digan mal patriotas! Europa y el campo. Dos excitantes a nuestra sensibilidad y cerebro.
Es más patriota nuestra actuación en el extrangero, que los que actuan, dentro de su casa, sin vistas al mundo.
Acabo de llegar al campo y dispuesto a empezar a trabajar fieramente.

On my way back to Barna, I had the pleasure of seeing your mother, who was very happy to hear from you. I also had the opportunity to meet your godson, he is beautiful; Pablo would be a good painting for you!
Yesterday I sent 4 photographs of my works to you by registered mail, as I mentioned in Paris. Please note that they were all painted before my visit to France.
I spent a few days in Barcelona. The effect, after having lived in Paris, was very overwhelming. The intelligentsia lives 5o years behind and artists are like amateurs. Lack of temperament and many pretensions! Here is a dream that stupefies all those unfortunate enough to spend their lives here.
I agree with you that to be a painter you have to stay in Paris. Here, we can be called bad patriots! Europe and the countryside. Too exciting for our sensibility and brain.
Acting abroad is more patriotic than those who act at home without a vision of the world.
Just arrived in the country and ready to start working ferociously. A few months here and then back to Paris.

c’est avec joie que j’ai lu au morne “Bulletin de l’Effort Moderne” l’hommage que des hommes jeunes, quel talent j’admire, vous ont adressé. C’est aussi avec joie que je m’y rallie de tout cœur. Ce fût un bel adieu à Paris la nuit de “Mercure”! Ces monstres et votre toile “La Femme en chemise” (je crois que c’est comme ça que vous l’appelez cette toile dont nous avons tout parlé le jour de nos adieux; celle que nous amions tant, moi et mes amis); deux fortes impressions de ma vie!
Plaisainterie de retour au classicisme (qu’est [ce] que cela veut dire. voyons!); tour de Babel de bêtises. Lâchété énorme. Les nigauds de critiques.
Les châtres (mi eunuques mi poupons) de peintres. Les enfants, qui ont peur d’une engratignure! Il faut bien savoir endurer un direct d’un lourd, parbleu!
Des puanteurs m’arrivent en forme de journaux parisiens et d’ailleurs, infecter la voûte de ma maison de ciel bleu!
Je travaille très énergiquement. Très encouragé. Serai de retour, comme d’habitude, aprés les fêtes de Noël

It is with joy that I read in the mournful “Bulletin de l’Effort Moderne” the homage that young people, whose talent I admire, have addressed to you. It is also with joy that I share it wholeheartedly: it was a beautiful farewell to Paris the night of the “Mercure”! Those monsters and your painting “La Femme en chemise” (I think that’s what you call it, the painting we talked about the day of our farewell; the one we were so fond of, my friends and I); two strong impressions of my life!
“Plaisanterie” back to classicism (what does that mean? Let’s see!); tower of Babel of nonsense. Enormous laziness. The nincompoops of criticism.
The castles (half eunuchs, half dolls) of the painters. The children, who are afraid of a scratch! You have to know how to take a punch from a bore, by golly!
The stinkers come to me in the form of Parisian and other newspapers, infesting the vault of my house with sky blue!
I am working with a lot of energy. Very lively. I will be back, as always, after Christmas.
Many kind words for your mother when you write to her.
Give my regards to your wife and love to Paul.

Vous m’ avez fait du bien ce matin. Avant de venir chez vous j’étais plongé dans des idées noires que vous m’ avez chassées.
Vous m’ avez parlé très sincèrement. Je m’ en moque absolument de me tromper. J’ aime mieux marcher toute ma vie dans les ténébres pourvu qu’au bout de mon éxistance je découvre quelque étincelle, quelque rayon de pur soleil que marcher comme tous les jeunes dans un éclairage artificiel emprunté aux arcs voltaïcs.
Je sens à nouveau le besoin autoritaire de travailler.

You have done me good this morning. Before I came to you I was buried in dark thoughts, which you have driven away.
You spoke to me with great sincerity. I do not care at all if I am wrong. I would rather walk my entire life in darkness provided that at the end of my existence I discover some spark, some ray of pure sunshine, than walk like all young people in artificial lighting borrowed from the arches.
I feel again the authoritarian need to work.

Breton and my friends have told me a lot about a great painting you have done; it seems unheard of.
I went to see your mother in Barcelona; they are all very well. My best wishes for this summer.
