MARÍA JOSÉ DE SIMÓN (SANTANDER, 1963) IS A VISUAL ARTIST WHO DEVELOPS HER MULTIDISCIPLINARY PRACTICE FROM HER STUDIO IN ROMA NORTE. HER WORK MOVES BETWEEN PAINTING AND JEWELRY DESIGN, GUIDED BY A REFINED INTUITION THAT AVOIDS THE DISCURSIVE. FAR FROM ANY EXPLANATORY INTENTION, HER WORK PROPOSES A PURELY TACTILE EXPERIENCE THAT DOES NOT QUESTION REALITY, BUT INHABITS IT FROM SENSIBILITY AND HARMONY. “Where and how did your relationship with art begin?“
From a very young age, in Spain
“How would you define your work? What does it seek to represent?“
My work has gradually evolved, expressing itself through masses of color and increasingly simpler.
“Where do you get your inspiration from?“
Abstract expressionism definitely moves me a lot; color, gestural strokes, canvas size… for me, Guerrero, Clifford Still, Rotcho are key in my painting.
“Do you have any quirks or habits in your studio?“
I like being alone, when nobody sees me or talks to me. I concentrate a lot, and noise bothers me.

“Do you have any rituals before you start painting?”
No, I love very large white canvases, facing them, perhaps the only thing I can think about is colors.
“At what time of day do you feel most like painting?“
Early in the morning.
“What are your favorite materials and techniques?“
Started painting with oil and brush on canvas, then with acrylic and brush, later with roller, with window cleaner… now I paint with my hands, it brings me closer to the paint and the canvas.
“Where would you be most excited to exhibit your work? “
In the MACO AREA (Mexico), or in Spain at ARCO.
