My name is Tamim Sibai, born in 1991 in Damascus, SYR and since 2016 I live and work in Berlin, GER. To choose the right time and place could be difficult but being yourself is a choice itself. I like capturing encountered behaviours, masks and mirror images and let it comes out through my oil paint brush strokes and the sense of the surface.

Tell us your story, how did you come to painting? Well my parents are both architects and beside that my dad he is a painter and sculptor. My older sister also studied Art and did her master in scenography, Art and sustainable design. I grow up surrounded by all kind of Artists from musicians, actors, singers, writers and directors. They were friends of my Family that took a part of my memory regarding Art, so that was oriented to me since I was a kid.

I had a passion for trying everything at first, but I was clear that I really enjoyed drawing and painting. When I was 15 years old I did some workshops in Damascus, in Jordan and London. In 2010 I started studying at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus and I got my Bachelor of Painting in 2014. From there I started to practice more and more, learning how art can open a huge door to unique communication between people and that it became an interest in reflecting my feelings using a material instead of words. I loved.

I wanted to go further and further with my Art, no idea where exactly but my aim was a place in Europe, So firstly I went to Khartoum, for almost two years to work and study German at Goethe Institut and there I had the First Solo exhibition at the French Culture Center. That was a big push from a very close Friends so I could apply and continue studying my Master in Berlin. I did my master in 2018 at the University of Arts *Udk in Berlin and since then i work and live there as an Painter.

How would you define your current painting? My Paintings tell stories and answer my questions and my curiosity about what I think and feel. It is a complex situation between movement and stillness, emotions and coldness, disorder and straightening and everything related to our routine of daily life.

Tell us about your style and technique. Any secret that can be told? The style and technique are like making a new friends, everytime you get to meet someone new and try many keys to know them better. I love to discover, try and meet, but there are two close friends of me, the Oil colour that I depend on reflecting my deepest feeling with it and the texture\surface that sometime likes to be soft or hard.

How do you usually start your paintings? With a sketch, a draft or is it just an improvisation? Improvisation, i believe that a sketch or draft is an Artwork itself and i do not need to re-paint it.

What are your motivation forces? And the artists who have been and are an influence for you? A question or a goal and sometimes nothing. I shape my art and improve my skills because I believe that art can have an effect indirectly to our thoughts and emotionsThis is my biggest motivation. Artists like a writers, singers, etc. I get inspiration from a specific artwork or period of a painter's life, sentence or a little details.

What can you tell us about your studio, what kind of place is it? I change my studies a lot, but they have always been places where I can be noisy, be depressed, think, recover or develop. It is a space to let things out, dialogue and share with others, a place that shows and explores the madness within me.

What is art for you? Art is like building a relationship with a kid, trying to feed it and look after it till it grows up and being independent so it can stand for itself, face the reality and deliver it owns thoughts and concepts for a better and healthy community.
