My name is Tamim Sibai, born in 1991 in Damascus, SYR, since 2016 I live and work in Berlin, GER. To choose the right time and place could be difficult but being yourself is a choice itself. I like capturing encountered behaviours, masks and mirror images and letting it come out through my oil paint brush strokes and the sense of the surface.

Tell us your story, how did you come to painting? Well my parents are both architects and beside that my dad he is a painter and sculptor. My sister studied Fine Art and did her master in scenography, Art and sustainable design. I grew up surrounded by mostly all kinds of Artists and Friends from musicians, actors, singers, writers and directors that took a big part of my memory regarding Art, so that was somehow oriented to me since I was a kid. I had a passion for trying everything in Art at first, but I was clear that I really enjoyed drawing and painting.

When I was 14 years old I Joined an Art institute in Damascus whereI did many workshops including some in Jordan and London. I started studying at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus in 2014. Since then I have been practicing more and more, and learning how important is Art that can open a massive door to a unique communication between people and that it became an interest in reflecting my feelings using a material instead of words.

I wanted to go further with my Art, and my aim was a place in Europe, So firstly I went to Khartoum, SUD for almost two years to work and study German at Goethe Institut, preparing for my next Journey in doing my Masters in Berlin, GER. During my residency there I had my First Solo exhibition at the French Culture Center in Khartoum, SUD. I did my masters in 2018 at the University of Arts Udk in Berlin and since then I have worked and lived there as an Painter.

How would you define your current painting? My Paintings tell stories and answer my questions and my curiosity about what I think and feel. It is a complex situation between movement and stillness, emotions and coldness, disorder and straightening and everything related to our routine of daily life.

Tell us about your style and technique. Any secret that can be told? Every style or technique is like making a new friend to me, everytime you get to meet someone new, you try different keys to know them better. I love to discover, try and meet, but there are two close friends, the Oil colours that I depend on reflecting my deepest feeling and playing with the texture and the surface that it shows its own character. how soft or hard could be!

How do you usually start your paintings? With a sketch, a draft or is it just an improvisation? Improvisation, i believe that a sketch or draft is an Artwork itself and i do not need to re-paint it.

What are your motivation forces? And the artists who have been and are an influence for you? A question or a goal and sometimes nothing. I shape my art and improve my skills because I believe that art can have an effect indirectly to our thoughts and emotions. This is my biggest motivation. I get inspiration from a specific artwork or period of a painter's life, sentence or poem. music or a scene in a theater and most likely details from our daily's life.

What can you tell us about your studio, what kind of place is it? I changed studios a lot, but it has always been a place where I can put out my unlimited feelings, or break boundaries and sometimes for recovering or developing. It is a space to let things out, and open a dialogue and share with others, a place that shows and explores me.

What is art for you? Art is like building a relationship with a kid, trying to feed it and look after it till it grows up and being independent so it can stand for itself, facing the reality and deliver its own thoughts and concepts for a better and healthy community.
